Power BI August 2026 Update: Everything New

Microsoft has shipped the Power BI August 2026 update, and it is one of the most report-design-heavy releases in a while — with a large batch of features moving from preview to Generally Available. Here is what matters, and what it means for teams building Power BI in Dubai and across the UAE.

Report design levels up — and most of it is GA

The headline is modern visual defaults and the customizable Theme pane reaching General Availability. New reports now start on Microsoft’s Fluent 2 base theme, and the Theme pane lets you set a base theme, adjust colour palettes, change text styles, set visual and page properties, and import or export custom themes — in Desktop or on the web. Font overrides were removed from the base theme, so the Text section now applies consistently across every visual.

Alongside it, a strong list of visual improvements went GA this month:

• Date picker for the slicer visual — relative selections that roll forward with time, a calendar, a slider, and a new Single date setting.
• Center value for donut charts — show a value in the middle (no overlaid card) that updates with filtering, cross-highlighting and drill.
• Matrix expand/collapse for column headers — +/− icons when you have more than one field in Columns, plus a saved default freeze state for row headers.
• Outer padding for bar, column, line, ribbon and waterfall charts — fill the plot area edge to edge when you want to.
• Slicer dropdown formatting — border colour, rounded corners, open-icon colour, an accent bar, and colours for hierarchy expand/collapse icons.
• Azure Maps — faster reference-layer shape matching, plus filtered reload with automatic zoom to the filtered area.

Perhaps the most strategically interesting is OneLake file URLs in report visuals and maps (GA): images stored in OneLake can now be used in the image visual, table and matrix cells, cards, button and list slicers, and custom icons — and reference-layer and shape-map files can be linked from OneLake too, with Power BI authenticating on the viewer’s behalf. It is another sign of how tightly reporting is being woven into Microsoft Fabric.

Smarter modeling and refresh

The Refresh button in the Power BI Service now offers three options — Refresh schema and data, Sync schema only, and Refresh data only — and refresh can be run at the table level. That is a genuinely useful bit of control for large models and long-running refreshes.

Copilot and AI

Two useful changes here. Copilot Summary and the Copilot Narrative visual can now read visuals hidden behind a display-only bookmark — so summaries can draw on content that is not visible by default, with row-level and object-level security still enforced. And Fabric App consumers now need only Read permission on the underlying semantic model instead of Build (authors still need Build) — a small change that makes apps much easier to share. Collaboration and mobile

• Comments in org apps — users can comment on report pages and visuals, start discussions, and @mention colleagues, with the current report context captured.
• Rotate view in the mobile report footer — switch layouts with one tap, even with the phone locked in portrait.
• Export to Excel from the mobile app (iOS and Android) — respecting current filters, slicers, drill state and row-level security.

For developers and embedding

• Faster PBIP development — Power BI Desktop detects external changes to project files and applies them in one click, and opens the project directly in VS Code.
• SharePoint embedding — browse and select a workspace in the UI instead of pasting a URL, and embed a single visual.
• Data connectivity — better contrast and readability in the Power Query UI, and connector icons now get a white background in Dark Mode.

One thing to action now

There is an important deprecation: from October, users on Power BI Desktop versions from March 2026 or earlier will no longer be able to save and share files to OneDrive and SharePoint. If your team relies on that, update Power BI Desktop to the latest build now to avoid disruption.
